Back in the 80s, the surefire way to spot a tourist — especially in my hometown of Orlando — was someone wearing a fanny pack strapped to their waist. Back then, those who dared to wear them became the butt of all kinds of hilarious jokes. Yet, in 2018, the fanny pack has made a stylish comeback and is here to stay.
One scroll through your Instagram feed is proof that the once taboo fashion accessory has made a triumphant return. Street style fashionistas have rocked them for years, much to the chagrin of the “fashion gods.” But the revival in mainstream fashion can be accredited to luxury fashion houses like Gucci making their own more sleek versions. Renaming them “belt bags,” our favorite brands saturated Fashion Week runways with them for the last two seasons.
So just how popular is the fanny pack or belt bag? According to eBay, more than 57,000 fanny packs were purchased on the site in 2017. Now, the hands-free belt bag is the must-have accessory, and can be found at every price point. From Gucci to ELOQUII and every brand in between, the offerings and styles are plentiful. Personally, I’m sold on the trend, and think it is here to stay. The convenience belt bags provide, coupled with the unfussy-ness of the accessory make them easy to style.
