In 2016, Beyonce and Michelle Obama showed the world how exquisite marigold looks on all shades of brown skin. These two powerhouse women, both dripping in #BlackGirlMagic, single-handedly solidified the golden hue as the perfect black girl friendly color. I mean have you really ever seen any melanin-deficient woman look as fantastic in marigold as a bronzed skin sistergirl? Sorry, I (actually) ain’t sorry. Black Girls Rock in marigold!
If you are anything like me, you couldn’t quite stop obsessing over Queen Bey’s marigold pleated and billowy ruffled Roberto Cavalli dress for the “Hold Up” video, released in April 2016. The gown was amazing and such a stark contrast to the urban streets down which Bey walks, smashing car windows and fire hydrants on her journey. The dress and the color look as if it was was all made to match her caramel complexion.
And then there’s Mrs. Obama who rocked this color first. In January 2016, Auntie Michelle stunned millions of TV viewers worldwide during President Obama’s final State of the Union speech. The moment she entered the House of Representatives gallery, social media erupted in chatter about how awesome he bronzed brown skin looked up against the beaming color. She definitely went out on top in the marigold wool crepe dress by Narciso Rodriguez, and stood out like a bright light among the see of dark drab suits that surrounded her.
I was sold on marigold after witnessing the way the sunshine glistened on their dark skin tones. Trust me, I have my fair share of items in this delightful hue in my closet (see previous posts here and here) following Bey and Michelle’s lead. So when SHEIN sent me this dress, I knew it would be a keeper. I also knew I wanted to pair it with other similarly colored pieces for a monochromatic marigold look.
Paired with this fluffy, fun and oh so snuggly coat in the same color, the monochromatic look pops. I added this amazing Gucci bag my hubby gave me for Christmas (thanks babe!), threw on some tall brown boots and the look was complete. It’s a simple, yet eye-catching and on-trend look that anyone can pull off with ease. The best part is it is far less expensive than both Beyonce and Michelle Obama’s looks!
SHEIN recently added a plus collection to its site (see my first review of the collection here.) While the brand’s plus selection has grown exponentially over the last month or so, it still isn’t as robust as the straight size offerings. Much to this fashionista’s dismay, many of the brand’s best and most popular styles aren’t offered in plus. They have, however, extended the sizing to 5x in some items. Let’s hope the continue to grow they plus items and add some of the same straight styles to the collection. I invite you to try SHEIN out and here is a little incentive: use code “nikkifree20” to get 20% off your purchase when you shop SHEIN!
