STYLE: Curves & Confidence

I haven’t always embraced my curves. Probably because for most of my formative years, I was pretty much a skinny chick. No hips. No rubbing thighs. No booty.

With the exception of my chest area (the tatas were always ginormous! lol), I was pretty much  as narrow as a beanpole. But in college, at Florida A&M University, I gained so much more than the traditional freshman fifteen that on a trip home for the holidays a neighbor joked that I had eaten the school’s mascot. Kinda cruel, I know. But it was that singular comment that made me realize that my clothes didn’t really fit right any longer and I couldn’t really find the cute and trendy clothes in my larger size in the same stores where I loved to shop.

But I noticed I got noticed more with curves. I also noticed that my curves gave me more confidence. And then I started finding clothes that complimented my curves, that accentuated my new hips, thighs and butt. Clothes like this Eva Mendes Elina sweater dress (on sale now for $35) sold exclusively at New York & Company. And speaking of New York & Company, when it was known as Lerner’s, it was the shopping mecca for Generation X girls all over the USA.

However, over the last year or so, I have ventured back into New York & Company to discover that they still actually offer some pretty affordable and cute clothing that, in many instances, come in sizes up to XXL. And curvy girls know that knit material can be our very best friend because it wraps neatly around our curves and hugs them nicely. Like this dress that I simply can’t get enough of.

The single greatest thing about the sweater dress is that you can wear it any way you like and with whatever you want. The fact that it serves as a base for cozy layers in the winter or can easily be worn with opaque tights and booties in the fall makes it one of the most versatile items of clothing you can own. I accessorized this particular dress with two brooches, tights, suede heels and my green chevron-adorned Goyard clutch! I love how this turned out!

I hope you like the look too, and as always, thanks so very much for stopping by!

Fashionably Yours,
